However, more and more women are experiencing hormonal problems in our youth — everything from missed periods, low sex drive, cysts in the breasts and ovaries, infertility, and breast cancer. There are many things we can do nutritionally to prevent and reverse these hormonal disorders. Balancing Hormones Naturally: My Experience. Before we get to the tips, I want to give you a little background on my personal history. When I was 3. 5, I started noticing patches of dark skin on my face. Melasma, also known as “the mask of pregnancy” or “age spots” is a result of hormonal imbalances which are largely due to nutritional deficiencies. Trust me, it's not fun to have your own mother tell you you have a mustache. A mustache you can't wash, bleach or wax off. I knew I had been suffering from adrenal exhaustion for a long time — ever since I was diagnosed with it in my mid- twenties. Adrenal exhaustion, or adrenal fatigue, is a condition where your adrenal glands are wiped out by stress, too much caffeine, inadequate rest, and malnutrition. It manifests itself in many ways including the problems I experienced: chronic fatigue and melasma. The thyroid gland works in tandem with the adrenal glands. So if your adrenal glands are shot, this can affect thyroid function. Thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Your thyroid controls many bodily functions including metabolism — this is why people who have hypothyroidism can't ever seem to lose weight. I have learned how to balance my hormones in the past few years by making various changes to my diet and lifestyle and taking nutritional supplements. Eat Nutrient Dense Foods. The main thing is to eat balanced meals with foods that are nutrient- dense. You don't have to go crazy with this. Make sure you get plenty of meat, fish, bone broth, good fats (see # 2 below), fresh or fermented fruits and veggies in your diet. If your lunch is a white bread sandwich with few thin strips of turkey and some potato chips and a Diet Coke, that's not gonna cut it. Opt instead for a big salad with lots of meat or seafood or cheese. Or have a sandwich but make it on sprouted bread or whole wheat sourdough and have a glass of whole milk or some kombucha instead of a soda. Liverwurst or egg salad (with real mayo made with olive oil, not canola or soybean oil) or grilled cheese (real cheese — not Velveeta) are better choices than peanut butter. Swap the margarine for real butter and coconut oil. If you want some toast, that's fine, but put some butter on it! Some of the most nutrient- dense foods are organ meats (liver, heart, kidney and other organ meats have 1. White flour and sugar are nutritionally empty so I look for better choices. I eat sprouted bread or real sourdough bread instead of bread made with white flour and commercial yeast. I also use natural sweeteners instead of refined sugar — look for honey, molasses, rapadura, sucanat, maple syrup, palm sugar, and stevia. Eat Plenty of Good Fats. Low- fat diets are probably the number one reason young and old women are having problems with their hormones. Hormones are made out of cholesterol. If you don't eat enough cholesterol, your body can't make hormones. What are good fats? Traditional fats that have been around for centuries — the fats our great- grandmothers ate. These include: butter, cream, egg yolks, whole milk, coconut milk, lard, beef tallow, coconut oil, palm oil, and olive oil. I also highly recommend cod liver oil. Bad fats that should be avoided include: canola oil, vegetable oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, and any hydrogenated oils. Read more in my post, 1. Ways to Eat More Fat. Avoid Soy. I think one of the other big reasons we are seeing more hormonal problems today is due to the increase of soy in our diets. Soy is a goitrogen, which blocks iodine uptake in the body. In women, iodine is stored in the thyroid gland, the breasts and the ovaries. Iodine deficiency causes thyroid disorders (including goiters, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer), cysts in the breasts and ovaries, and breast cancer and ovarian cancer. You may think you're not eating a lot of soy since you don't drink soy milk or eat tofu. But these days, soy is in almost everything. Most restaurants use soybean oil to cook with, and most packaged and processed foods contain soybean oil and/or soy lecithin. Most of the meat and dairy we consume is from animals fed soy. Most mayonnaise and salad dressings contain soybean oil. It is okay to eat soy in small amounts, as a condiment, as long as it is naturally fermented (like naturally fermented soy sauce, miso, tempeh, or natto). It is best to avoid unfermented soy foods like soy milk and soy cheese. It is also best to avoid processed and packaged foods that contain soy. Get Your Minerals On! Most of us are depleted of minerals. Phytic acid in whole grains (like oats and whole wheat) deplete the body of minerals (unless these foods are properly soaked or sprouted — see my post on soaking grains.) Minerals are vitally important to balancing hormones. For example, if you are low in zinc, which many of us are, you will not be able to produce enough testosterone (yes, even women need a certain amount of testosterone — this is vital to a healthy sex drive). Iodine is a trace mineral most of us are deficient in. The Japanese have one of the lowest rates of breast cancer. I believe this is partly due to the fact that they consume large quantities of iodine, mainly in the form of fish broth and seaweed. They eat very little soy compared to the amount of fish, fish broth and sewaweed). Japanese people traditionally eat miso soup with all their meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner. Modern miso soup is often made with MSG powder — but traditionally prepared miso soup is made with bonito broth. Bonito broth is made with fish. The fish are small and they use the whole fish in the broth, including the heads. The reason this is important is the head is where the thyroid gland is contained. The thyroid is where iodine is stored. So if you are making fish broth, you need to include the head to get the iodine. The soup also contains seaweed which is also rich in iodine. Recently, they even helped create a new disease — PMDD — and a new indication for a drug whose patent was running out: Prozac (now called Sarafem). What’s wrong with this picture? It’s based on the assumption that the symptoms of PMS are an inevitable part of being a woman and require “medical intervention” with serious medication to correct them. Nothing could be further from the truth! To think that 7. 5 percent of women have a design flaw that requires medical treatment to live a normal life is just absurd. If you are one of the many women that suffer from PMS, you an end your suffering using five simple dietary and lifestyle interventions. I will explain how to do that. But first, I want to tell you a story. Curing PMDD Without Medications. This is the story of a patient of mine with PMDD who was barely able to work or function in her family — suffering three weeks out of the month. She was severely depressed, fatigued, and anxious, and suffered severe food and sugar cravings, which led to overeating and weight gain. We know that sugar, caffeine, alcohol, stress, and lack of exercise all contribute to worsening PMS. So I had her change her diet, take a few supplements and herbs, and start exercising — and within just one cycle, her life changed. The results were dramatic. All of her symptoms resolved, she lost weight, and dramatically increased her energy. Her mood stabilized and her acne and dry skin cleared up. The approach I used to treat this patient is part of an approach called systems, or functional medicine. Even though some of my suggestions may seem severe, science shows that they work. Give them a try and you will see in just one or two cycles how much better you feel. Simple Steps to Eliminate PMS1. Clean up your diet. This means: Stop eating refined flour, sugar, and processed foods. Cut out caffeine. Stop drinking alcohol. Balance your blood sugar by eating protein, such as a protein shake, eggs, and nut butters, for breakfast. Eat evenly throughout the day and don’t skip meals. Don’t eat within three hours of bedtime. Cut out all dairy and consider eliminating other common allergens for a few months, especially gluten. Increase fiber in your diet from vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, and whole grains. Two tablespoons of ground flax seeds a day are especially helpful in correcting constipation and balancing hormones. Put them in a shake or sprinkle them on salads or food. They provide a great workout both physically and mentally, and I get to work out with my friends. I always look forward to team training as well. MMA is actually a really big team sport - - you become a family with your teammates. There is a lot of trust that goes into training, and everyone is pushing their limits together and also encouraging one another along the way. The group MMA and fitness classes at Five Element have provided an amazing support system that makes working out addicting. Martial arts has become a healthy obsession, and I love learning and researching the different forms. LIVESTRONG. COM: What's your weekly exercise schedule? Kate R.: Monday: Cardio for 2. Tuesday: I have a private lesson with my coach to work on MMA techniques for an hour, then an hour of Power. Fit (a HIIT workout combining MMA techniques and exercises), kickboxing for an hour, then MMA for another hour followed by 3. Tuesday is my long day, but I love it! Wednesday: Ninety minutes of cardio and weight training. Thursday: An hour of cardio and weight training, an hour of MMA, an hour of kickboxing and then 3. Friday: An hour of Power. Fit. Saturday: In the mornings I get to work out with one of my best friends who is a figure competitor. We usually do a HIIT workout. Then I coach Power. Fit for an hour and a kickboxing class for another hour. Saturday is also our big team- training day in which we do a lot of sparring - - about an hour and a half. Sunday: Rest day. I'm in the gym a lot, but I have very big goals of becoming a great martial artist. I first started out only going two days a week, which then grew into three, then five. Kate R.: I eat all of the time - - usually about five to six times a day, and each meal has lots of healthy protein, veggies, carbs and fat. People tease me because there is always food around. It's interesting because I eat more now than I did when I was at my heaviest. I always have healthy foods around, and I have gotten to the point where I crave healthy things. I like to keep quick, grab- and- go foods on hand because I am always on the run. I love having cucumbers, hard- boiled eggs and fruit, and I think I have a jar of peanut butter stashed away just about everywhere. My favorite tip is to keep food simple. You don't have to be cooking all of the time. I cook one day a week. Meals do not have to be these extravagant things. Stick to the simple foods you love that keep you fueled. LIVESTRONG. COM: What's the range of calories you eat per day. Kate R.: I really don't count calories. I love using the chart on My. Plate, which shows my carb, fat and protein breakdown, and I try to keep them in balance. I eat when I am hungry, and on different days I need different amounts of calories, depending on my training. I usually get the precut, pre- washed packs so I can just grab and go. For me it is a huge time saver, and I probably would be searching for food to eat if I didn't. I love having broccoli, cucumbers, green beans and lettuce on hand at all times. Hard- boiled eggs are always in my fridge (thanks to my husband, because I haven't figured out the perfect cooking formula). We usually make a big batch of turkey chili or cook up some healthy protein and have that on hand for lunches during the week. LIVESTRONG. COM: How do you strategize for meals? Kate R.: I usually get everything set on Sunday so I’m ready for the week. I have to make a few trips to the grocery store just so my veggies stay fresh, but I do all of my cooking on the weekend because the weekdays are so busy. This time Sylvia controlled the fight for five rounds by utilizing his massive reach and constantly keeping the jab on Arlovski's face thus keeping him from coming in close. Sylvia won a lop- sided unanimous decision and remained the heavyweight champion. Sylvia next fought Mundials world Jiu- Jitsu champion, 2- time ADCC world champion and Jiu- Jitsu Pan American champion Jeff Monson at UFC 6. The fight showcased Sylvia's growth as a mixed martial artist as he avoided danger from Monson on the ground, and even attempted a triangle choke submission himself. On March 3, 2. 00.
